Destin, Florida is known for beautiful beaches, sunshine, and warm weather. As a vacationer here, you probably want to maximize your time breathing in the fresh air. A street legal golf cart rental is the perfect way to travel in Florida. It gives you the ability to check out the beaches and attractions in the open air.

However, although our golf carts are street legal, they aren’t able to be driven everywhere in Destin due to local traffic laws. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to determine which streets are legal to drive on with your rented golf cart, and which aren’t. Please note, you are solely responsible for any citations or fines attached to our rental golf cart during your rental period.

Florida Law

According to Florida Statute 316.2122, “A low-speed vehicle or mini truck may be operated only on streets where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less. This does not prohibit a low-speed vehicle or mini truck from crossing a road or street at an intersection where the road or street has a posted speed limit of more than 35 miles per hour.”

So, you can drive a street legal golf cart (provided the maximum speed is between 20-25 miles per hour) on any Florida road that has a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour. This law also allows for a street legal golf cart to cross a street with a higher posted speed limit where it intersects with the road currently traveled. A large percentage of Destin falls within this category, so as long as you’re mindful of the roads you use, you shouldn’t have much trouble getting around the beautiful beach town and enjoying your vacation.

A “Low-speed vehicle” means any four-wheeled vehicle whose top speed is greater than 20 miles per hour but not greater than 25 miles per hour, including, but not limited to, neighborhood electric vehicles.

Restricted Communities

One other thing to consider when renting a street legal golf cart is that some communities within Destin have additional restrictions regarding golf cart use within their property. Some of these properties include Mainsail, Destiny By The Sea, Villages of Crystal Beach, Emerald Dunes Condo, Grand Caribbean, and Sandestin Resort. This is not an extensive list and we recommend you check with the property manager of your private community before renting one of our golf carts, so you can be sure you’ll be allowed to drive it within the property.
